The Walks of the Parque Natural da Serra de Sao Mamede mountains.

North Alentejo (Alto Alentejo), next to the border with Spain holds the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede one of Portugal's national parks. This is a protected area of agricultural and forested land which was naturally chestnut forest but planted with cork oak, olive and pine.

The variation in terrain and habitat thoughout the park gives each walk its own unique character. Some walks are steep and rocky whilst others level and pastoral. Although these are called mountains the surrounding plain is of the order of 300m above sea level and the Sao Mamede peak is at 1025m so these are hills which although steep in places the walking is rarely more than moderate.

The Alentejo's Sao Mamede hills really are a wonderful place for country walking.
